Prague. December, 2012

Our first holiday together, a wonderful festive city break.

We flew to Prague and jumped on the very efficient metro to Hotel Corinthia in the heart of the city. This was a great base with an extensive breakfast selection plus a spa and pool on one of the highest floors, although this did mean a slightly stressful shopping trip as Dan forgot his trunks and there weren’t a huge amount in the shops in December. Anyway, when we first arrived we were starving and not quite ready to brave the below zero temperatures so we decided to order room service, Dan was thrilled to have a cheeseburger & chocolate milkshake delivered to the door!

Eventually we headed out for the evening and walked around the main square which had a lovely atmosphere with all the Christmas markets setup and people milling around the enormous Christmas tree drinking mulled wine waiting for the clock to do its hourly show! We found a cute little bar selling huge beers and settled in for a hearty bowl of soup. The table next to us must have been a choir group and at one point burst into ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ which was honestly so cute, such a lovely evening.

The next day we wandered all around the city, even stopping to do some ice skating, crossing several of the pretty bridges over the river eventually making it up the hill to the impressive castle as the sun was setting resulting in a beautiful view back over the city. On the way back down we stopped at a cute little place for dinner and then headed home for a dip in the pool, no longer able to stand the cold!

The next day after a massage in the spa, we decided to go to Prague Zoo. We hopped on the bus but I would not recommend this route as it was absolutely rammed and uncomfortably hot so not a fun journey. The zoo is huge and has loads of amazing animals including a Polar bear but its enclosure seemed far too small to me so that was a little bit sad. Back in the city we visited the National Gallery which was interesting but it wasn’t long before we headed to a nearby bar to sample some more of the local beer.

Dinner that evening was a steak restaurant which to be honest was a disaster, but it was quite funny watching Dan kick off with the waiter!

Prague is a beautiful city and so pretty at Christmas, although it is FREEZING. A brilliant first trip away together.
